Give every company the same job

A quote is easier to compare when each contractor receives the same address, driveway outline and service request. Decide which areas you want cleared before asking for prices: just the driveway, a walkway, the front steps or another entrance.

Include anything that could change access, such as a shared driveway, a narrow gate or cars that usually stay parked outside. A satellite outline helps explain the area, but the contractor still needs to confirm the job.

Put the service details beside the price

Ask each company to explain its offer in writing. A lower starting price may include a different scope or service schedule. Use the answers to compare the complete offer.

• Which surfaces and entrances are included?
• What snowfall amount triggers a visit?
• How are repeat visits during a storm handled?
• Is clearing the pile left by the street plow included?
• What dates does the service cover?
• Are taxes, add-ons and any snowfall limits included in the quoted total?

Confirm your address is on the route

Serving your neighbourhood does not necessarily mean a contractor has room for another property on your street. Ask whether the company can take your exact address and how you will receive service updates.

Compare the offers from your chosen contractors, then choose the one that fits the work you need and the service terms you are comfortable with. A directory estimate is a planning range; the contractor’s written quote is the offer to review.
